Panasonic — in an economic development coup for Denver, the region and all of Colorado — will create an estimated 300 high-paying jobs at a new hub it has unveiled adjacent to the Denver International Airport.

The new facility, announced on Thursday, will be built on the 400-acre Peña Boulevard Station for Panasonic’s fast-growing business solution operations and a technology center. It will include Panasonic Enterprise Solution’s  operation base and a technology center. The average salary is projected to be just below $90,000 at $89,554.

The first phase of the build-to-suit for Panasonic is expected to be 100,000 square feet, with plans to grow it by 50 percent or 100 percent in subsequent phases, said Ferd Belz, senior vice president of L.C. Fulenwider. the developer of the transit-oriented development. Panasonic has not yet chosen a team to build the facility, he said.

The Panasonic facility, code-named Project P, will be built at Peña Boulevard Station at the east rail line at 61st Street and Peña Boulevard. DIA, the City and County of Denver and two other landowners are participating in the development.

Panasonic looked at 22 cities before selecting Denver, Belz said.

“Like Gov. (John) Hickenlooper said, this is not only good for Denver and the region, but this a game changer for the entire state,” Belz said.

Panasonic’s choice speaks volumes about what is happening in Denver and the state, according to Hickenlooper.

“We are thrilled to welcome Panasonic Enterprise Solution and the hundreds of new jobs they bring to Colorado,” Hickenlooper said.

“When global, forward-thinking companies like Panasonic choose Colorado as a home base, we know that we are well on our way to being the most innovative state in the country,” Hickenlooper continued.

‘“With the latest transportation project underway to further connect our renowned airport, and as home to the nation’s most educated and talented workforce, we know Panasonic will find great success here,” the governor said.

The Panasonic site, to be built on seven to 10 acres, is expected to be completed in mid-2016.

It will allow Panasonic Enterprise Solutions to further expand its rapidly growing large-scale audio visual and eco solutions business.

The plan to make the area around the Panasonic site a global showcase for state-of-the-art sustainable community development.

Panasonic also will work with the developer and landowners to create an ECO and Smart business anchored community based upon five categories for Smart Lifestyles – energy, security, mobility, health care and community.

Those are the  underlying principles for Panasonic’s  recently opened Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town, , a sustainable smart green community developed by Panasonic near Tokyo.

Colorado is at the epicenter of adoption of solar technology for the generation of sustainable power in the U.S., which was an important factor for Panasonic.

“Attracting Panasonic as the anchor tenant for this new transit-oriented development is one of the biggest economic-development wins for Denver and the entire metro region in the past several years,” said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock.

“It marks a giant step forward for the Corridor of Opportunity between Downtown and DIA and for our growing aerotropolis,” Hancock said.

“Our culture of ingenuity and incredibly talented workforce continue to make Denver a magnet for industries of tomorrow, delivering new opportunities and connections to further strengthen our economy for decades to come,” Hancock said.

“Panasonic Enterprise Solutions looks forward to working closely with the State of Colorado, City and County of Denver, Denver International Airport and Fulenwider to create a public-private partnership that will drive global attention to the importance of sustainable community development,” said Jim Doyle, president of Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Co.

“Their deep commitment to sustainability and quality of life make Denver and the state of Colorado the perfect place to do this,” Doyle said.

Landing Panasonic is an important anchor for the fledgling Peña Boulevard Station, according to Cal Fulenwider III.

“Having the ability to develop a first class transit oriented development at the front door of DIA is huge,” Fulenwider said.

“By adding Panasonic Enterprise Solutions to our team in order to develop a smart, sustainable, state-of-the-art TOD takes us to a whole different dimension,” Fulenwider continued. “This is going to be a very special place to live, work and play…. very special,” said Fulenwider.

Peña Boulevard Station will be five minutes from DIA and 20 minutes from downtown, when Panasonic opens in 2016.

The proximity to DIA was crucial for Panasonic, Belz said.

“They’ll have a North American sales team that will travel extensively around the world,” Belz said.

“Before they chose Denver, they narrowed it down to two or three cities. I believe in all of the cities they considered, the sites were all next to airports.”
