CREJ conference lands Mandarich

On Friday, May 6, you will have a rare opportunity to hear David Mandarich speak publicly

Mandarich, president and chief operating officer of MDC Holdings Inc., parent of Richmond American Homes and the largest publicly traded homebuilding company based in Denver, will be a keynote speaker at the conference, which is expected to draw about 500.

The half-day conference is sponsored by the Colorado Real Estate Journal.

The CREJ conference kicks off at 7:15 a.m. and ends at noon. It will be held at the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center in the Inverness Business Park.

Mandarich will be one of more than two dozen local real estate leaders speaking at the CREJ 2016 Residential Land Development Conference & Expo.

The cost is $75.

Mike Kboudi, a land broker for more than two decades, and a managing director at Cushman & Wakefield, helped put together the speaker panel of the CREJ conference.

“We got some really good people,” said Kboudi, who will moderate a panel about density along the U.S. 36 corridor in Adams Count, Broomfield, Superior and Westminster. He also will moderate a homebuilder panel.

“I’m really pretty excited about this,” Kboudi said.

He said he strived to get a range of speakers for the CREJ conference, which provides four hours of continuing education credit for real estate professionals who can use the hours.

“We were looking for a little of diversity,” Kboudi said. “We were looking for the large builders and the small builders, the national builders and the private companies,” he said.

Jeff Whiton, CEO and executive vice president of the Home Builders Association, will provide opening remarks, along with Greg Morris and Anne Turner,  respectively, the managing partner of Cushman & Wakefield and the CEO of the Denver Metro Association of Realtors.

  • Bill Jencks, vice president of Real Estate Ranch Capital LLC;
  • Matt Janke, senior vice president of ESX Management;

  • Craig D. Veldhulzen, managing director of Terra Cause Capital LLC;
  • Brock Chapman, regional general manage of True Life Cos.;
  • Jeff Zimmermann, an architect and principal of Design Workshop;
  • Thomas Kopf, principal of Norris Design;
  • David Clinger, president of David A. Clinger & Associates;
  • Timothy T. Nelson, senior associates at Planning & Landscape Architecture;
  • Matt Osborn, the Colorado division president of Tri Pointe Homes LLC;
  • Heidi Majerik, vice president of business development for Wonderland Homes;
  •  David Sinkey, president of Boulder Creek Neighborhoods.
  • Jerry B. Richmond III, executive vice president of Raintree Investment Corp.;
  • Chad Murphy, an associate for real estate development at Hines.
  • And Ryan Lefkowitz, vice president of acquisitions for Avanti Properties Group.

Lee Alpert, principal of Lee Alpert & Co. and Marcus Palkowitsh, 0f MSP Cos., also might be panel members.

This conference is a bit of a departure for CREJ, according to Kboudi.

“CREJ typically holds commercial real estate conferences, while this one has a bit more of a residential real estate focus,” he said.

However, he thinks the CREJ conference is in its wheelhouse.

“If you think about it, the homebuilding market really is a commercial market,” Kboudi said.

“If you look along the Front Range, probably 85 percent of the land sales are for residential land,” Kboudi said.

“So there really is a big commercial side to the residential housing market,” he said.

As far as homebuilders, no local company has bought more land in Colorado than MDC.It’s almost a given that MDC will pull permits than any other builder each month. Often, MDC pulls more permits than its next three or four rivals combined.

“I’ve probably done about 20 or 25 deals with MDC over the past 20 years,” Kboudi said.

“I would say I have sold them 2,000 lots in the metro area,” he said.

He has known Mandarich for more than two decades.

“I think people are really going to be interested in what David is going to address,” Kboudi said.

He said he would expect that Mandarich and other panel members will touch on topics such as affordability, sustainability, Denver’s place nationally in the market, rising construction costs and fees, and water and labor challenges.

One hot topic that he doesn’t think panel members will delve deeply into is reforming construction defect laws.

Leaders in commercial and residential real estate are just about unanimous in agreeing that Colorado’s construction defect laws have kept developers from building many affordable condos, contributing the metro area’s growing affordable housing crisis

“The funny thing is that has become a topic that everyone agrees on, so when it is raised, people say, “I know, I know. I think that while it might be mentioned, it might be kind of glossed over. You could easily do an entire conference on construction defects.”
